If you're in high school or are at college as an engineering undeclared major, it's important to learn what field you're interested in. Perhaps you have a passion for machines and decide to go into mechanical engineering, love the environment and want to go into environmental engineering, or want to improve medical care and end up going into biomedical engineering.
You can search the web to learn about engineering majors and careers, watch YouTube videos, watch vlogs such as "day in the life of being a [...] major or what it's like being a [...] major, and learn from family and friends.

It's a great idea to introduce yourself to your professors! Not only will you have shown interest, but you may feel more confident and comfortable in class. Perhaps your professor is doing research on a topic you're interested in and you can inquire about it. If you're too nervous to walk up to your professor after class, you can introduce yourself during their office hours or perhaps send them an email.
It may help to make friends with students a couple of years ahead of you. Not only will you have made another friend, but they are someone with college experience. They will better understand college life and perhaps they are in the same or similar major as you. They can also recommend college events and places to eat! Having a friend you can go to for information, support, recommendations, and advice may be very helpful.
While it is important to be passionate about your major, it is also important to have other interests! Participating in intramural or club sports is a great way to exercise and get your mind off of your studies. You may also find artistic, social justice, political, community service, media, religious clubs, and more at your college! Remember, college is a big place and it's never too late to try something new.
Are most of the students in your engineering classes men? Perhaps you wish there were more women studying engineering. Most colleges offer clubs and organizations that are just for women in Engineering/STEM. Joining a group like this will allow you to make more friends, meet more female engineers, and it can be a supportive community!
At many colleges you can join the Society of Women Engineers organization! |
