It’s important to have relationships with people who understand what it’s like being a woman in this profession. These friends and your family will remind you that you’re good enough, smart enough, strong enough, and that your work is worthwhile.
In the United States, there is a tendency to assign gendered labels to certain professions. Try not to let that deter you from pursuing a career you're interested in.

Sometimes we think that it is too late to change our major. It's not! In freshman year of college, the curriculum is pretty much the same for all engineering students. The college wants everyone to have a solid understanding of math and the sciences before getting into your particular field (i.e. mechanical, environmental, biomedical, etc.). At some colleges, you don't declare a specific engineering major until sophmore year. Even after that, it is perfectly possible to change your major. If you wish to do so, talk to your academic advisor and they will help you!
There may be times when people don't take you seriously. It's important to stand up for yourself because you deserve to be treated with respect. Always voice your ideas because they are important. Don't let anyone discourage you from what you're passionate about.
Even though as engineers we are solving problems, our work in not inherently good. We need to be aware of the long term effects our work has on the environment and who may be disproportionally helped and who is not.
Personally, I didn't know any women engineers growing up. It can be helpful to read stories of women engineers, past and present. You get to learn about the history and advancements in engineering, how women have contributed to the field, how things work, the different types of jobs you could have, and so much more! You will also grow more confident and inspired.
Continue learning about what you're interested in. Learn how something works, programs, history, inspiring people, current events and advancements, anything that fuels your passion and keeps you motivated. You will also, naturally, feel more confident.
I think that there are many of us who often feel the need to be perfect. Especially if we are of few women in a male dominated environment, we may feel the need to be perfect and that we can't make mistakes. It's okay if you don't understand a topic right away or have a misstep. Remember to not compare yourself to others and that nobody is perfect.
College is a place to learn, have fun, and try new things. Remember, it is never too late to join a club, meet new people, etc.!
Don't be intimidated by asking questions or seeking extra help. It's totally normal and something we all need. Remember, if you're confused about something, it's very likely that someone else is confused too. What's important is that you understand the material. Ask questions during class, ask a friend for help, send an email, or go to your professor's office hours.
Many colleges have a library where there are designated appropriate sound levels for each floor. If you like to study alone in a quiet space, there is likely a floor where the noise level is very quiet. If you like to study with a partner or group, there will be a floor where conversation is perfectly allowed. And of course, you can find other great places to study. A mentor is like an advisor and can be an adult or even a a student a couple of years ahead of you. Mentors are a proven way to help students by providing information, support, encouragement, improve your self confidence, and help you navigate life. You can find a mentor simply by meeting upperclassman or introducing yourself to a professor.
